At Tumbling River Ranch, the summer kids program is our major focus. We are well-known as the premier kids ranch in Colorado, for good reason: we not only focus on the interests of the children, but relish the opportunity to introduce them to the Western lifestyle and Western ideas–offering the rare opportunity to “unplug” and spend some quality time . Ours is a flexible program, built both to allow families ample time together and kids to have plenty of their own adventures.
Our counselors are ready after breakfast with exciting schedules for children 3 to 5 years old, which continue through lunch and throughout the afternoon. The 3-5 group spends quality time each day with the ranch pony (hand-led pony rides are often the highlight of the trip), but that’s just the start! A typical day at Tumbling River can include arts and crafts, bonding with the animals in our Critter Pen, playing games in the Play Meadow, or reading stories in the tipi. Our counselors all have a background with children–from camp counselors to teachers–and tailor the schedule to the 3-5 group each week.
Our kids program activities are great for all ages, but certain activities are more suitable for specific age groups. In some situations, kids 6-8 years old and those 9-11 years old will separate to better accommodate each age group’s interest. Most days, however, the groups follow a similar schedule. Often, mornings will start with a kids-only trail ride, and can be followed by nature hikes, field games, arts and crafts, or geocaching. As with the 3-5 group, the schedule is tailored to the group each week, and can therefore change considerably based on the kids’ interest. Other activities include fishing, swimming, shooting, archery, rodeo practice, riding lessons, hay rides, GaGa ball (in a brand-new pit!), capture the flag, overnight camp-outs (this is not our overnight pack trip, which is for the teen group (12+). The overnight camp outs are not on our fixed schedule, but we are more than happy to set-up a overnight camp-out for your family in our play meadow. We will provide the sleeping bags and s’mores and kids and parents can enjoy a night under the stars!
The counselor team at Tumbling River is top-notch: each was chosen based on their experience with and desire to work with children. Most have an extensive background working with kids, and many return each summer–testament both to their love of the west and the quality of our programs every year. All of our counselors are CPR and First Aid trained.
What about teenagers? At Tumbling River, teens have the best situation of anyone–no more groaning at the thought of an attached-at-the-hip vacation with their parents or being relegated to the kids’ table while the grown-ups have all the fun. Teens at the ranch can participate in all activities, with parents or without. They can go on all of the horseback rides (including longer rides and the *overnight pack trip). *The overnight pack trip is for the teen group only. Kids must be 12 and have a parent accompany them on this excursion. We also offer other great adventurous activities like rock climbing (on real rock, not an artificial wall), trap shooting, and fly-fishing for the first time. An added bonus: they get to hang out with fun, excited, and cool teen counselors who are typically just starting college. The teen counselors know just when to add an outdoor sports game, throw in another horse clinic, or just go to the arena with water balloons. Many ranches say that they have things to do for teens, but Tumbling River ensures that your teenagers will feel genuinely included and will more than just enjoy the activities we have for their group–the teen group is traditionally the one most likely to encourage the parents into a return stay.
Some of the teen group highlights: rock climbing (not on a wall), the teen loping brunch ride, white-water rafting, the overnight pack trip to a ghost town in the mountains, fly-fishing clinics, teen cookout, yoga, capture the flag, private arena clinics and horseback games.
Tumbling River Ranch is one of the only ranches in Colorado that not only offers a nanny program, but loves babies and has lots of gear. In fact, Scott and Megan added the program once they started a family of their own. We want the program to work for your family, so you have a few options. The full nanny program (8 hours a day to use as you’d like; this is a one-on-one program with our college-age nanny) is one option. If you and your family feel that you do not need the full nanny program, there is a small room and board charge for each toddler (under 3 years old). However, once you get to the ranch and find yourself enjoying the activities and wanting to get out on your own, we offer babysitting services for an additional charge.

Jason and Kelley Sikes
We spent a fabulous week in early June at TRR. The scenery, amazing staff, great food and fun activities created the perfect environment for our best vacation yet. The wranglers were knowledgeable and patient, which made even the young riders (and their moms) comfortable. The owners and staff were nothing short of amazing in every way--service, friendliness, engagement with children...there just are not enough good things to say.
President, Conlin Travel
At Conlin Travel, we book many family and multigenerational family vacations. I can say, without hesitation and to the person, families we sent to Tumbling River Ranch come back saying it was the best family vacation they have ever had. When children are happy, parents are happy and that’s guaranteed to happen at Tumbling River Ranch.
I wish I didn't have to leave! Tumbling River Ranch is such a special place. Our main focus was to get to ride while at TRR and we were taken on the most amazing rides I have ever been on. The scenery will forever be etched in my mind. The wranglers do an amazing job of taking care of all levels of riders and make the trail rides so fun as well as breathtaking. I highly recommend the overnight pack trip- it was a highlight! I could go on and on....I will just say it is a place you need to go and experience for yourself and you will be so happy you did. I hope to go back again!
Chief of Wilderness Stewardship, National Park Service
In September of 2016 I coordinated a 4 day wilderness stewardship training session at Tumbling River Ranch for 24 National Park Service personnel. Our group was extremely impressed with all aspects of TRR, including the conference faciliites, quality food, comfortable and economical lodging, friendly and competent staff, and Megan and Scott's hospitality and attention to sevice. The serene location at the foot of the Mount Evans Wilderness in the Colorado high country served as the perfect venue to meet our training objectives. I hope to host another training session at TRR someday in the future.
